I am a man on a journey.
I am a man on a journey who has been seeking for a safe place of connection in each chapter of this journey.
As a young man growing up in apartheid-ravaged South Africa, I was torn between the privilege I was entitled to as a young white male, and the stomach wrenching moments witnessing the brutal treatment of black people around me. This was so different to the relationship I had with the black people who helped keep our home and garden.
My longing grew to be a bridge between disconnected people, bringing them back into connection and society back into wholeness.
My journey led me through an early training in electronics, a flirtation with teaching, before settling into the computer world of Information Technology and an early marriage. While this was happening, I was also exploring various spiritual disciplines and self-development courses.
Along the way a serious motor accident left me in a coma for 2 weeks and began the disintegration of life as I had known it. Connection seemed elusive, and so with two failed marriages behind me, I settled into rebuilding my life.
I experienced times of deep disillusionment, alongside a deep hunger for answers and authentic connection.
In 1996 I met Sue, my gorgeous wife at church and embarked on one of the biggest adventures of my life. Our marriage included 7 teenagers between us, and a whole lot of baggage.
The next years were both challenging and full of joy, and it became clear that we needed to find a new way to create the authentic connection I had been longing for my whole life. That journey took me out of IT Project Management, and during the 2009 financial crash I started my own business.
Running my business as a window cleaner, I began to let go of my identity of a “successful businessman” and embrace a much simpler lifestyle. To my amazement, this humble service rewarded me richly with appreciative clients, a new appreciation of the seasons, of nature, and generous reflective times a I listened to inspirational books & music while I worked.
In the words of the Irish blessing:
“Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free
‘Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
‘Twill be in the valley of love and delight.”
Over the next decade of building a flourishing business and relationship with my wife, I began to live into the authentic connection with myself and others that I had been looking for my whole life.
My adventures included Coaching Training, Imago, The ManKind Project, and EcCT masterclass.
Currently as a coach with the Kairos Encounter Centre and Brett’s Coaching, and as an elder and mentor in the ManKind Project UK&I (https://mankindprojectuki.org/) my passion to help people create the authentic connection with themselves and others still guides my life.
